I Am Sam Analysis

Sam loves his daughter Lucy very much and tries very hard to keep her with him. Although, he is mentally-challenged and the court argues whether or not he should keep Lucy. They say he only has the ability of â€Å"a 7-year old† and doesn’t have enough money. He looks for a lawyer to help him get Lucy back, which she offers for free under the pressure of being seen by these women who gossip about her at work. She is super annoyed with him at first but eventually starts to understand and be nicer to him, so she helps him what to say at court.Lucy is with a foster family who eventually gives her back to Sam because they don’t think they can promise to give her the love she’s never had. They decide to be on Sam’s side in court & promise not to tell that Sam can’t take care of her alone. They win the argument and Sam and Lucy live together again. Main Character Description Sam: He is a mentally-challenged father who loves his daughter very much. He’s very caring, happy, and loves Ihop. He enjoys making paper cranes and other different shapes too.His job was working at Starbucks, and then he quits and works at Pizza Hut. Sam can also lose his temper quite easily as shown in the scene where he and Lucy eat at a different breakfast place and he throws a fit when she tells him they don’t have French pancakes with fruit toppings on the side. Lucy: She is a very smart and sneaky young girl. Even though her dad isn’t normal, she still loves him unconditionally and wants to see him as much as possible. She is also very understanding towards her father and cares about him a lot.Rita: Rita is Sam’s lawyer to help him with getting Lucy back. Psychological Illness Autism is portrayed in this movie with Sam who struggles to keep his daughter to live with him.In the beginning, Lucy’s friend asks her, â€Å"What is wrong with your dad? Is he retarded? † and replies with a yes. Her friend judges Sam very negatively because he is not â€Å"normal. † On the day of Lucy’s birthday party, Sam tries to calm everyone down so they can surprise Lucy; he touches one of the kids to hide and the child says, â€Å"get off me! I have cooties! † The child doesn’t even want to be touched or handled by him because of the way he is.The father also pushes him down away from his child right when Lucy walks in and sees that. She loves her father no matter what because he has always been there for her and will always love her like no one else can. Her peers would look at him like he is a weirdo and laugh at him. Whenever he would talk to people, they would just keep nodding their heads like they’re listening because they don’t care what they have to say. But Sam has some friends just like him who all like to hang out just like a regular group of friends. They would compliment each other a lot, encourage each other, support each other, and talk about their same interests. The court officials thought it was best for Lucy to not live with Sam because they don’t think he has the ability to support her. Especially since he has a mental illness, they don’t think he would be able to take care of her properly. But he pointed out that all she needs from him is love, support, patience, to listen to her, and happiness.

tories, fairytales and myths

Stories, fairytales and myths that were created thousand years ago are relevant today. These folklores have provided the basis for some cultures and in some cultures is a way of life. Stories and fairytales are relevant today, because they often have hidden meanings, which are often times used as examples in everyday life.Take for instance the story of the Tortoise and the Hare, this story shows that being big and strong does not help you to win, but using your wits and your brain is what helps you to overcome certain things. It also teaches us today, that slow and steady won the race and it never pays to be in a hurry and brag about how good you are.The story of Cinderella is relevant to today’s society as, you still have a lot of Cinderalla’s around. Especially the part about the wicked stepmother and how her siblings treated her. This story of Cinderella is all too real within our present day society, and it is up to us to rescue the Cinderalla’s of our time.G reek mythologies are very important and relevant to today’s society. From the story of Pandora we have the concept of beautiful evil, which is still prevalent in our society. Pandora was the image of a perfect, beautiful woman, she was created to please the eye and deceive mankind. This idea of a ‘beautiful evil' is still present in today's society. In the mass media viewers are constantly bombarded with images of beautiful women in sexual roles and evil roles.Women are often portrayed as gifts to men and then become detrimental to them. This ‘good girl gone bad' image has its roots in Pandora's myth. Pandora was a perfect, beautiful woman when Epimetheus took her as his wife. But Pandora was a little too curious. Her weakness and inferior mind led her to open the container and release all of the evils onto mankind.Stories today form the basis of many cultures, as stories in some cultures are handed down from generation to generation, to teach life lessons and illu strate the folly of mankind. Often time’s stories are used as references and examples, when disciplining a troublesome child or are used as a way to inform a person of the consequences of their actions. An example of this is the story of the Boy Who Cried Wolf. This little boy cried wolf so many times that he was not believed when the wolf actually came and took the sheep. This serves as a lesson to would be liars, children and even adults who like to play pranks. The moral of the story is that, sometimes when you lie or make things up a lot, it is very hard for anyone to believe you. In the end the young boy learned his lesson. Some people argue that stories, fairytales and myths are rubbish and have no relevance in today’s society, but in my opinion, they do give relevance to the meaning of life, and what it is to love and live. You can live and not be happy. Fairytales especially, the ones like Cinderella make you believe in happy endings. Happy endings still exist to day, regardless of what people think. The story of Hansel and Gretel has a moral to it, that appearances are deceiving. This is very true in today’s society. Appearances among people are very deceiving and often times, you get trapped by the very person that seems to want to help you, only to destroy or try to destroy you in the end.To me the fairytale of Hansel and Gretel speak of caution and cautions people to beware of who they are around. I also think that Hansel and Gretel is a great story for teaching children not to trust strangers and to be aware of the people they are around. In conclusion, stories, fairytales, and myths are just as relevant a today as they were thousands of years ago.Works CitedTyree, R. (1998). Pandora. An Analysis of Jose Corozon De Jesus Essay

Analysis Love is a variety of different feelings, states, and attitudes that ranges from interpersonal affection to pleasure. It can refer to an emotion of a strong attraction and personal attachment. It can also be a virtue representing human kindness, compassion, and affection—†the unselfish loyal and benevolent concern for the good of another†. It may also describe compassionate and affectionate actions towards other humans, one’s self or  animals. Ancient Greeks identified four forms of love: kinship or familiarity (in Greek, storge), friendship (philia), sexual and/or romantic desire (eros), and self-emptying or divine love (agape). Modern authors have distinguished further varieties of romantic love. The question, â€Å"What is love?† has been discussed widely by those who are puzzled by this existential phenomenon. Indeed, what is love? Nowadays a lot have their own idea about love. Each has his own convictions and beliefs about love. There is love at first sight, love is sweeter in the second time around, some even describe it as blind, others say that love is in the air and love is you. Love is a word that has a broad meaning. We cannot elucidate it in just simple terms; we can just give the characteristics but not the meaning of it. Only the person that feels that he/she is in love can give the interpretation of it not by the words but by the action. In his encyclical Deus Caritas Est (2005), Pope Benedict XVI writes, â€Å"Today, the term ‘love’ has become one of the most frequently used and misused of words, a word to which we attach quite different meanings.† Love is emotions that cannot be understand by human reason but only by heart. Defining love is very hard for everyone but feeling in love is common to all men. That is why Corazon De Jesus put in his poem â€Å"Ang Pag-ibig, isipin mo, pag inisip, nasa-puso! Pag pinuso, nasa-isip, kaya’t hindi mo makuro.† In our times today, the word love is very common but somehow different in meaning when we refer to the oldest time when our lolo courting our lola. That is why many old persons are complaining about the issue of love in our new era. They say that the true meaning of the love is being destroyed. Corazon De Jesus wrote his poem about Pag-ibig to show his point of view about love in a poetical way. He has the imagery of love in his mind expresses through words. When a man is truly in love with a woman, he will do everything to get her sweet answer. Courting a girl in the older times is very difficult. To have the hand of the girl, a man must know how to get water from the well, get firewood in the forest or in the mountain and giving the girl some fruits or vegetable from his farm. However, this culture is being forgotten by the youth of today. Courting a girl in our times is very basic. It will start  from getting the cellphone number followed by date and then without a year, a boy can get the girl. True love is self-denials love. We cannot say that it is love if it is still in our heart, if we do not express it. A quotation says a bell is not a bell until you ring it; a song is not a song until you sing it, and love in your heart is not love until you give it away. Some of us are just contended that we are in love. We are afraid to share it in our love ones not because we do not love him/her but we are afraid of rejection. We are satisfied of being in love but we are scared to stay in love. Corazon de Jesus mentioned in his poem, â€Å"Ang Pag-ibig kapag duwag ay payapa’t walang agos, Walang talon, walang baha, walang luha, walang lunos!† We are very futuristic. We always think what will happen for tomorrow that is why we are being terrified. We think if the person we love today is still in love with us in the next day. If the lover would deny his need for affection, expressing love would soon become a burden and it would only result to different form of isolation . Man has a natural longing to complete himself by personally relating with other men, for without love, there can be no true interpersonal relations among people.1 There is often little evidence for loving; we have to trust the person we love and without faith we cannot love either God or other people. And without love, life is not worth living. As Corazon de Jesus said in his poem Kayong mga kabataang pag-ibig ang ninanais, Kayong mga paruparong sa ilawan lumiligid, Kapag kayo’y umiibig na, hahanapin ang panganib, At pakpak ninyo’y masusunog sa pag-ibig! Conclusion As a seminarian, being in loved is very important. As what Fr. Lloyd Cinco said to us in our retreat, â€Å"You cannot be a priest if you do not know how to love.† Love is a duty. Only when it is a duty to love, only then is love eternally secured against every change and happily secure against despair.  There are three things that destroy love. First are the changes in our inclinations and feelings. Second are the changes in the person we love. The last is the unhappiness, pain and suffering that can lead to despair. That is the cause why people are afraid to stay in love, because of the tribulations and hardships in the relationship. They are just contented in falling in love. People are also terrified of their obligations because love seeks security. Therefore swear an oath, swear fidelity to each other. However this oath offers nothing but a false security because the two persons who swear to love each other forever, swears by something that is lower than love itself. The two swear by their love to each other forever, instead of swearing love to each other by eternity. Therefore, both of them swear by something that could change over time. If what one feels changes, then there would be nothing that would bind their love. The only way to find true security if one is to make an oath is to swear by the duty that shall love. Spontaneous love is still subject to change because it is not consciously grounded upon eternal but depends entirely on one’s emotion and feeling. It could change into its opposite, into hate or it can become the sickness of jealousy.

John D. Rockefeller, critical analysis. Did he make America better Research Paper

John D. Rockefeller, critical analysis. Did he make America better. NON-Biographical - Research Paper Example Whether his intention in giving back to the country that made him super wealthy was altruistic is debatable and shall be debatable. Saint or capitalist sinner, John D. Rockefeller undoubtedly changed the face of business in America as well as its attitude toward education. John D. Rockefeller, the storied industrial mogul and philanthropist â€Å"...appeared to the general public either as a demon of avarice and extortion...or as a high-minded philanthropist, bestowing his bounty with charitable devotion to good works† (Latham, Introduction v). It is undeniable, however, that perhaps one of the most important contributions by Rockefeller was in the area of education. Generally today we think of the State University of New York (SUNY) system as one of the finest in the country and we credit Rockefeller for its original and ongoing funding. Yet one wonders based on evidence presented whether his motives were as pure as most would like to think. Gatto’s quote of Benjamin Kidd, the British evolutionist, provides a chilling analysis of these intentions as a way for him and the â€Å"Education Trust† of the early twentieth century to â€Å"impose on the young the idea of subordination† (Chapter 2:2) – a subordination that would ultimately further the goals of capitalist endeavors by creating a malleable workforce. Rockefeller himself in the 1906 Occasional Letter Number One is quoted by Gatto: â€Å"...In our dreams...people yield themselves with perfect docility to our molding hands† (Chapter 2: 2) Rockefeller goes on to admit his intention [and the intention of capitalist support of mass education] is not to educate great thinkers but to â€Å"organize children...and teach them to do in a perfect way the things their fathers and mothers are doing in an imperfect way† (Gatto, Chapter 2:2). Intentions aside, and Rockefeller’s view of what he was actually promoting

Different approaches to performance management Essay

Different approaches to performance management - Essay Example Performance management is using by countries such GDP, organizations and individuals. Performance management is troubled to get the best performance from person, but goes extra in that it also aspire to get the best performance from the team and from the organization as an entire (R. Wayne Mondy). Performance management derives from the human resource management approach as a strategic and incorporated approach to the management and growth of people. The procedure of recognize, evaluating and mounting the work performance of employees in the organization, so that the organizational purpose and objectives are more efficiently achieved, while at the similar time benefiting employees in terms of credit, receiving feedback, catering for labor needs and offering career leadership. This definition emphasizes that performance management is a procedure. We can see the exemplify following: From this definition, we can believe that performance management is worried by means of humanizing not only the performance of the individual, but also the performance of the team and the organization. ... gnificant thing of performance management is set up a system in which individuals and groups take blame for the continuous development of commerce processes, and of their own skills and contributions. 2.2 The Objectives of Performance Management System 2.2.1 Discrimination A manager must try to discriminate objectively between those who are contributing to the achievement of the organization's objectives and those who are not. In other word, a manager must be talented to appraisal an individual's past performance and assess strengths, level of effort and areas to reward and expand subordinates. Here the focal point is on what the employee has really done in the past, and an effort is made to build on the employee's strengths and make development in other areas so that the employee can carry out more efficiently in the future (Dessler, 1999). 2.2.2 Reward For performance to be encouraged, rewards are necessary. When a managers reward a part of subordinates for their past work, other subordinate will recognized they must work harder in the future. Reward is also a useful tool for motivate employees, suing a system like performance-related pay, to best performance at work. 2.2.3 Development The third objective of the performance management is growth. It includes expand person, term and organization. Performance management as a system concerns not only just for the past, but also for the future. When employees reach their full potential, the organization can also benefit fully from their abilities and contributions (Arthur Sherman, 1998, p.323). 2.2.4 Communication As a two ways system, performance management can also construct a kind of feedback flanked by employees and managers. Employee communiqu is a basic part in the system. It is because an effectual performance

DNA Fingerprinting Research Proposal Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

DNA Fingerprinting - Research Proposal Example Jeffreys began at the simplest, by detecting single copies of the genes and the phenomena of introns. It was this research that introduced the genuine concepts of restricted fragment length polymorphism or RFLP.(Newton, 2004, np) By this technique it was possible to divide the DNA in to smaller pieces, which in turn led to discovery of SNP or single nucleotide polymorphism. The SNP became a designation for points in DNA that show variation in the nucleotide arrangement, which prevents their cutting. These two discoveries were going to affect the entire future of the genetic technologies. (Newton, 2004, np) The discovery of the DNA printing made it an exclusive fact that humans differ substantially from other life forms, a notion he had pride on for many millennia. Now DNA finger printing is a common house hold concept, as people know that in order to identify someone, a small trace of him or her is required in the form of hair, fingerprint, semen, saliva etc. Jeffreys studied the variations in the human DNA, and focused on those variations that would come up in repeat DNA sequences. This research led him to conclude that no two DNA strands can be the same, and act as genetic "fingerprints" to the person.(Sir Alex Jeffreys, 2007, np) The finding again was augmented by data derived from experiments on seal myoglobin genes, where the phenomena of mini-satellites in human genome was discovered. This was a major breakthrough in the start of the research of genetic fingerprinting. (Sir Alex Jeffreys, 2007, np) Mini or micro satellites are located on the non-coding DNA, and it is this DNA th at accumulates random variations at faster pace than the coding DNA. Many of these non-coding DNA genes are gene regulators, but a significant amount does not contain any information at all. These "junk DNA" are essentially the phenomenon which is known as the micro-satellites. The micro-satellites contain short and repetitive DNA sequences within the sequence. Usually their location is easily predicted, however, this sequence repetition is variable in every individual.(Olson, 2006, np) It is the micro-satellites that are cut when DNA fragmentation results, which lead to various lengths of band formation or RFLPs.The main concept behind this individuality of specie within itself is the arrangement of base pairs in the DNA. This arrangement difference is what differentiates species and animals and plants, as well as persons from each other. Therefore, every DNA sequence is unique. The DNA sequence in one organism will be the same in all of its cells, whether unicellular or multi-cell ular. The number of base pairs is different in every species, along with its configuration, which differentiates the various species from each other. (Antler, 2003, para 1) DNA fingerprinting is now being used in many fields of common life and advanced genetic researches. One of the most interesting areas is the diagnosis of inherited disease within an individual. It is now a known fact that humans inherit many illness genes, which are contributory in progression of the disease. Ethical issues aside, in prenatal and newborn infants, this technology can be used to identify any inherited disorders that they may be carrying, and institute treatment should the need arise. Due to the increased involvement

Education EEC403 - Designing Learning Assignment

Education EEC403 - Designing Learning - Assignment Example The traits of the students must be thought out and implemented into the design, even such things which are not obvious, like the usage of technology. As an online article pointed out, â€Å"If students carry laptops to class, does this affect how we equip the rooms,† (Oblinger, 1991). The inverse is true as well, when looking at how certain students act and their learning habits, one can look to the classrooms for indications of how they formed. If a student spends the majority of their time in a classroom where they are unable to concentrate or work, they may develop the habit of not doing work or not caring about the pursuit of knowledge. For this reason, classrooms are largely responsible for the actions of students. In modern society, technology is becoming integrated into nearly every aspect of life. Students, especially, use technology to complete schoolwork and to communicate with peers. Teachers must learn to integrate the devices students use to create an efficient le arning environment to which they are able to relate. By submitting to their needs, they are able to learn more and retain more.

BURGER KING CASE STUDY Term Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

BURGER KING CASE STUDY - Term Paper Example Experts suggested that the campaign was a clear indicator that Burger King was the favorite burger of the Americans. This is because consumers ate Whopper more often than the other products. The campaign also doubled Whopper sales in the quarter that ended on December 2007. The burger also got a replica of Whopper at Madame Tussauds in the same year. The campaign was able to reach both the old and the young. It was also well received by the advertising and branding experts (Faheem 3). The Pros and Cons of Using Viral Marketing Campaigns to Promote a Product Consumers are capable of spreading online information about services and products to their peers through forwarding e-mail through viral marketing campaigns. Because the information spreads very fast and through the online medium, it cannot be obstructed by geographical boundaries. Therefore, it has the ability to reach many potential customers within a very short time (Dekimpe, Gijsbrechts, and Wuyts 257). Viral marketing assists a business to remain afloat in the competitive business world through a strategy that is easy to incorporate in a defined buyer-society and empower the unattached audience with marketing tips, guidance, and training. The word of mouth idea strengthens the peer-to-peer recommendation of the service or product. It also assists the business to get revenue from local interest in the scheme (Borade 1). There are possible risks linked with the use of viral marketing campaigns. When the message spreads like a virus over the internet, it is difficult to gain control of the process again. Furthermore, because the customers are free to spread any message, it is impossible to control the message they are writing to their peers. When consumers are unable to edit the message, they are less likely to spread the message thus making the campaign ineffective. If the process of spreading the messages gets out of control, it may cause logistical issues such as high costs and slowing down of the Web s ites (Dekimpe, Gijsbrechts, Wuyts 261). Thus, the process can be costly to the company if gets out of control. Factors That Resulted In the Success of the Whopper Freakout Campaign The success of the Whopper Freakout campaign can be asserted by the innovative advertising campaigns that Burger King had run back in the late 1950s. The most successful of all the campaigns was the 1974 â€Å"Have it Your Way† campaign, which motivated customers to order a burger the way they preferred it. In the following years, the fast food company has launched a number of innovative and unconventional campaigns that assisted Burger King in increasing its visibility among the target customers and promote its products. Another factor that can be attributed to its success is the fact the campaign featured a viral marketing website, which was composed of the videotaped consumer reactions. The campaign was also backed by other promotional components such as print, online ads, and TV advertisements. A reputable company CP + B. designed the advertisements (Faheem 3). The Whopper Freakout campaign generated a lot of interest among the target consumers who consisted of the technology savvy youngsters and it quickly spread by the word-of-mouth marketing (Faheem 3). In other words, the campaign made people start talking about the products as they even spread through the internet. Word-of-mouth marketing puts the brand directly into the conversations among

During the medieval period, Japan introduced Chinese charcoal-making techniques that represented an advance for those days, and around the 14th century charcoal was in common use. In the early modern period, Chado (the Way of Tea) took on greater importance, and this led to the making of an even finer variety of charcoal for the tea ceremony. Today, Japans charcoal-making techniques are admired worldwide. We can classify the different types of charcoal used in Japan into two broad categories: kuro-zumi (black charcoal) and shiro-zumi (white charcoal). http://www.oilgae.com/energy/sou/ae/re/be/bm/bag/bag.html Bagasse (sometimes spelled bagass) is the biomass remaining after sugarcane stalks are crushed to extract their juice. The Significance Of Materials Management Construction Essay

The Significance Of Materials Management Construction Essay Materials management is a process for planning, executing and controlling field and office activities in construction. the goal of materials management is to insure that construction materials are available at their point of use when needed. the materials management system attempts to insure that the right quality and quantity of materials are appropriately selected purchased, delivered and handled on site in a timely manner and at a reasonable cost. materials management is the system for planning and controlling all of the efforts necessary to ensure that the correct quality and quantity of materials are properly specified in a timely manner, are obtained at a reasonable cost and most important element in project management. materials represent a major expense in construction, so minimizing procurement costs improves opportunities for reducing the overrall project costs. poor management can result in increased costs during construction. 2.Significance of materials management Materials management is the important guarantee of building construction quality of products or materials management is important to reduce the cost of the project hand. 3.Materials management benefits Effective plans to build and improve the system of material management master plan by filling in the gaps and production of environmentally responsible and effective results. institution campus, effective management of the office or home can expect from materials program provides a wide range of benefits. first, the long-term cost savings, as consolidation, reconfiguring, and better management of the campus core infrastructure to reduce annual operating costs. institution campuses, office or home and get the highest and best use of the campus property. materials management is an effective means of a more comprehensive approach to managing material use and emissions, solid waste, hazardous waste, recycling. request today become more environmentally friendly. Finally, effective management can improve the aesthetics of materials. remove unsafe and unsightly conditions, will create the best sight, creating a more pedestrian friendly environment, improving the living and working in the visual and physical sense. Better accountability on part of materials as well as other departments as noone can shift blame to others. à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢As materials management is handled by single authority, it can result in bettercoordination, as it becomes the central point for any material relatedproblems. à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢Materials management department makes sure that better quality material issupplied timely to the requesting departments. This can result in betterperformance of the organization. à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢A materials management system is typically controlled through an informationsystem, thus, can help in taking decisions related to material in theorganization. à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢One indirect advantage of material management is that good quality materialdevelops the ethical and moral standard in an organization. However, pleasenote there is no study on this issue.  ·Are important for the management of the building materials materials management is to reduce construction costs and one of the main ways to control construction quality, material management methods correctly can provide high yield and high efficiency for engineering materials provide a guarantee of nature can reduce the construction cost of project on the profitability of construction enterprises play a key role.  ·Building material of construction is the basic condition is also an important part in the construction engineering management. management of building materials from ensure the quality of construction works on the basis reduce the cost of construction.  ·Good construction materials management is divided into the following main areas: A budget, materials management Storage of materials management Project closeout phase materials management When construction reached the end of the construction stage most engineering materials have been using also not neglect the management of the material. we should carefully check the remainder of the construction site of adjust according to the progress of the construction supplement the shortage of construction material, corresponding processing avoid the extra material on completion of the project a significant amount of material remaining cases reduce the handling for the second time. for engineering construction management of waste, the waste produced in can be used to gather again using. 4.Disadvantages of materials management  ·Continuous observation is required.  ·.Extra-manpower required.  ·Huge investment for good infrastructure facilities.  ·Building material category of construction site confused, and represent a significant proportion of the expenses in the cost of the project, general civil construction accounted for about 70 per cent of the total cost, materials management and accounting is good or bad, on the control of engineering cost of production, economic efficiency is good or bad, processing speed of cash flow, cash flow is of great significance such as profit and loss.Under the premise of how to ensure the quality of engineering, acquisition, use and management of various materials in a reasonable manner, to reduce the liquidity of an occupation, to reduce construction costs, it is very important.  ·Project partially decentralized purchasing patterns cause confusion for procurement of materials The material of construction enterprises Department of procurement authority to the project, although has the advantage of flexibility, but there are some problems. First, project the department of in professionals less than situation, temporary deployed non professionals engaged in material purchase management work, not only efficiency low, and difficult to guarantee material quality, more may for engineering in the use fake material, caused major engineering quality or personal accident ; second, the project the department of respectively the establishment of warehouse, their own, material difficult to spice up, will lead to management costs increase, funds working capital slow ; again, dispersed purchase shaped not scale bulk, difficult to implementation of purchase price poor, enterprise the overall economic benefits decline in. Therefore, the use of decentralized procurement model, greatly influenced the economic benefits of material procurement management, even to the entire management of construction enterprises bring a degree of confusion, resulting in material management of enterprises in a state of disorder.  ·To manually manage the difficult to adapt to the requirements of modern enterprise development At present most of the material management of construction enterprises still stuck in the manual management of the State. Materials from the library to the library to go through a number of links, manual management is not only inefficient and prone to human error. As with management to inventory information exchange between the Treasury, will easily lead to inventory backlog affect cash flow. Furthermore, a wide variety of building materials, manually will cause data summary and analysis of difficulties, and real-time, dynamic control for material difficult to achieve.  ·Materials management personnels quality should be improved At present, the quality of building materials in construction enterprise management personnel is generally not very high, most are not professionals, and some even have not received professional training, it is difficult to meet the needs of building construction enterprises. In fact, materials management on personnel requirements are very high, in addition to good ideological and political quality, compliance with national laws and regulations, and to be familiar with building materials market, flexible use of various procurement methods, have a higher contract negotiation skills and a keen market sense of smell.Question for now is a lot of people who have experience in materials management, often the theory of literacy and professional level is not high, and the lack of management capacity of the system, and students with a high level of theoretical knowledge and lack of practical experience because of insufficient experience. Good thinking, consciousness is high, the style is, bot h with theoretical knowledge and practical experience of compound talents of a serious.  ·Material management system is not sound Some of the construction of no importance to material management system of Construction Enterprise, lead to unsound system, materials management is very haphazard. There is no strict verification, head of site construction materials Request Form, granted as much as you want to. Some material led the procedure is not complete, leading to physical and Book of engineering materials, and materials management information untrue. Many can recycle and reuse of waste management, resulting in material waste. Materials bring that around, bad bad corrosion, low effective utilization, even if the materials have been stolen too little, virtually increases the total cost of the project. 5.Material management system in construction site aterial acceptance and storage systems Site Materials required by the buyer purchases back to back, acceptance of the material should be carried out.  ·Material acceptance of custodians and materials, and acceptance of material should be received by the bill of materials for acceptance into the material name, the number of a column,And carried out checks on the quality of materials for the library, acceptance than to the principle of applications to return the excess quantity,But if necessary, approved by the leadership approved the approval can be appended after the procurement procedures of storage.  ·Acceptance of materials shall be conducted in approaching the spot of materials, and the opening of the storage invoices,On storage of materials should fill in the name of the storage material specification brand of storage time information by sponsor. And should indicate the purchase order number in storage, to lead the review, as a result of the number of quality, specification discrepancies should be used in temporary storage of forms.  ·All material storage, must be strictly acceptance, to ensure its quality on the basis of the Measured quantity,According to the different material properties of objects, take points, measured, weighed, the number of parties such as the method of acceptance, the prohibition of about.  ·For bulk materials, ask for high grade materials, special materials, such as three certificates.  ·Because the number of material large packaging or as a result relations, was unable to be acceptance of the material acceptance. Can number, weight or quantity of packaging, packaging cases for the preliminary acceptance,After serious clean up after no further formal acceptance and, if necessary, after out of control in the acceptance.  ·After the material Library, when deemed necessary by the competent leadership or departments at all levels, to reinspect to the storage of materials,If it is found that does not match the storage conditions, will pursue relevant personnel responsibilities, resulting in the loss, by personnel compensation.  ·Is not capable of material, such as working capital for the library shelf material,Entry acceptance of the material must be used by warehouse management and construction team designated officer of the second joint participation in and sign the delivery note. B.Materials used and the use of any materials out of the library system of the material must be led with formalities,Material administrators should not be issued without picking process materials except for special circumstances to receive a small amount of material, but must be a replacement after the procedure. 6.Improve the quality of materials management at the scene Building materials are the most important part of the whole construction project cost, strengthening the material of construction project management, to improve the quality of the project, reducing the cost of the project will play an active role in this work for the better, you should make sure several:  ·First, choose a high-quality team of subcontracting is the first step to reduce costs. comparison of subcontracting team on the parties, on the recommendation track to pick up better quality than quality than price . labor force is site specific production operator, level of service quality will directly influence the quality of construction, in a sense concerns a projects success or failure.  ·Therefore, employers should first select in select services team who are more familiar with, pay attention to reputation, high comprehensive quality of labor force, not only the high or low prices or by virtue of the relationship as the basis for selection,to the first contact, and lack of know services team select use, to from are side two regard to its personnel constitute, and economic of, and social credibility, and business quality, and do engineering such as regard serious investigation, to the by must be relationship introduced services team also not relax investigation, by investigation to services team situation do known, as select services team based on the, to the by investigation heart still not the end of and is you want use services team, can be use trial way investigation again do decision.  ·Second, the material based on the progress of the project plan, timely adjustments to purchase plan, to balance their material length, turnaround times, using cycles, avoid redundant, blind purchase backlog, modification and just take up space, reduce losses.  ·Third, the acceptance of the good material, and rigorous testing of materials to enter the construction site, as well as the original certificate of quality documents and other relevant. to achieve the medical check, maintain a strict to eliminate poor quality material to enter the construction site.  ·To no longer use or reporting as no material in time for the time being, inventory and maintenance. while building material loss account. rental of material cleanup exit in a timely manner, thereby ensuring that minimize the rental fee. material inventory. inventory per month for access to and use of materials, to calculate the dosage, interference of the month, and ledger account balances, account should match.  ·To strengthen the management of project materials to eliminate poor quality material to enter the construction site, must be nurtured to strengthen the management of project materials to eliminate poor quality material to enter the construction site, must be nurtured high quality materials management team. only in this way in order to constantly improve the quality of materials management personnel to meet the needs of the enterprises construction production. 7.The site materials management Materials Management in construction site, as its name suggests is through the scientific method, to take appropriate measures for effective management of building construction materials at the scene. This is achieved by a management system, rely on scientific control the use of construction materials, supervision of construction quality of raw materials, ensure the quality of construction, reduce the cost of the project. In order to achieve this for administrative purposes, construction project management should be developed for the materials of construction site management system of rewards and punishments. Promote the Rational use of shoddy materials, careful reduce material waste, eliminate materials, material loss and loss prevention, reward a reasonable amount of material savings, punishing material waste, reduce project cost, and project management for the Enterprise to create the most profit.Materials Management in construction site, not just to reduce construction costs, profit margins create a maximum of one purpose. It also bears monitoring application materials quality, quantity, for construction projects based on the design requirements,Construction construction see the basis for creating the conditions and specifications. 8.The site materials management features  ·according to the construction characteristics of the production cycle, decided to elaborate materials management in construction site wide range of complex and large, liquid, surface keeping more.  ·There is a diversity of types of work and procedures for building construction, part of sudden changes,Determines the material at construction site to establish a strict management measures and measures for the Administration to ensure the smooth progress of the construction.  ·Hesitate there is a special material management in construction site, also determines its people, machinery and construction site management with different characteristics. No matter what are the characteristics of materials management in construction site, regardless of the material of construction site management methods and steps to be taken,Eventually through a number of reasonable provision, control and use of building materials to ensure progress, duration, quality of construction projects.Performance of Contract for Construction Project, completed in accordance with the quality standards for the design, laid the foundation.  ·Use of the rental of materials management Getting ready for construction work : This is the beginning of materials management at the scene, creating a good environment for materials management and provide the necessary conditions. Understanding the Progress of the project requirements and the required quantity and quality requirements of various materials. Understand how materials supply. Determine the goals of materials management, and supply department signed a supply contract. All site material layout planning. For good sites, warehouses, road facilities and related tasks such as preparing.  ·Organization and Management of construction work : This is a live material management and implementation phases of the management target Reasonable arrangement of materials approach, making acceptance of materials at the scene. Meet supply contracts, guarantee the construction needs. Master the construction schedule changes, adjust the material matching supply plan in a timely manner. Strengthening materials kept at the scene, reduce losses and waste, prevent loss. Organization of fair use.  ·End of construction phases : construction near the end, the main content of the Site Management : According to finish projects, clean up the material with. Extra for canceling the Organization. Demolition of Temporary equipment in a timely manner. Good recovery and utilization of scrap materials. For material settlement, summarizing material consumption levels and management of construction projects. 9.The new site layout  ·Thiscase where i think there are many unreasonable, so i made a correction in the following . 10.Effect of materials management Improvement of enterprises economic benefit is determined by many factors, one of the important condition is to strengthen the management of engineering materials.Only good material management, is likely to be low cost, high quality, high efficiency,This is in the construction of the importance and urgency of strengthening the management of material is located.Main problems existing in the management of material a time, in building construction, some projects are high costs, poor quality,Low cost-effectiveness, removing many reasons, poor materials are not strict management, is one of the important reasons.Problems in Engineering Materials Procurement.Because the system is not strict, individual procurement officers purchase homes fetch high prices at low prices, although there is a low price to buy the material, but poor material, do not meet the design requirements of the standard. As a result, poor workmanship, not only caused a lot of waste and damage corporate reputations.Problems in the materials in the library. Some unhealthy or feeding system of construction enterprises and some new traffic controllers poor quality, no strict enforcement of the feeding management system,For that material is neither weighed, several, or check the specifications, quality, which result in high cost, low quality.Problems in the storage and use of materials.Construction materials used are generally bulk material is more, you need to keep open.Because the system is not strict or keep personnel do not have a strong sense of responsibility, little material deterioration or the material. So in the case should have the above there is a problem. 11.Conclusion Materials management in construction site, as long as the material is required for the project, since the end of to enter the construction site to construction materials to clean the entire process of management, are in scope of material management in construction site.In short, materials management in construction site, not just to reduce construction costs, profit margins create a maximum of one purpose. it also bears monitoring application quality and quantity of materials, construction specifications for construction projects based on the design requirements, see the basis for creating the conditions and construction. Strengthening the management of construction engineering materials, it should be good training for managers : strengthening the political and professional quality training of management personnel. in management ideas, related sector personnel clear own in material cost forecast, and plan the preparation of, and purchase plan the implementation of, and material keep, and material use, and material clean up process in the basic work program, and method and responsibility ; in business quality regard, to material management workers specific business operation skills training, improve material management workers business operation ability, and regular and not regular work effect evaluation, material management workers in competition in the play the largest potential

Letter from Birmingham Jail Essay -- Letter from Birmingham Jail Essay

Race. It is a word that is associated with many thoughts, words, and emotions. The color of peoples' skin is the first thing that is noticed. Throughout history people have judged and mistreated because they were of the wrong   race. A prime example of this is the racial tension between blacks and whites. The driving force behind this tension is the past. For many years blacks were mistreated and abused based solely on the color of the skin. In Martin Luther King J.R.'s "Letter from Birmingham   Jail", he uses references to the past and people of the past to strengthen his point. The actions in the past and present can affect the future.   Ã‚  Ã‚   In "Letter from Birmingham Jail", King uses references to Saints, philosophers of the past, and theologians to get into the minds of the clergymen to whom he is writing the letter. By using the words of white people of the past, King can use the clergyman's own beliefs to his benefit. He uses the quote, "sin is separation" (WoI pg. 158) to show that segregating people because of color is morally and religiously wrong.   Ã‚  Ã‚   Though King began ...

This paper will argue that during â€Å"The trial and Death of Socrates†, Socrates could have given better arguments for his defense. First it will outline the prejudices or accusations Socrates has to face during his trial. It will then show how Socrates acted as tough he wanted to lose the case and finally it will conclude explaining the arguments Socrates could have given in order to be acquitted. During the first speech (18a-19b) Socrates has to overcome two different types of prejudices: the old prejudice against Socrates set by the plays of Aristophanes and the new prejudices that included impiety charged by Meletus as well as the corruption of the youth.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  In fact more than once is Socrates confused for someone else. Aristophanes is responsible for latter but it is reconstructed by Meletus as including both impiety and corruption and Socrates is portrayed as a corrupt teacher .the first charge of impiety also originates with Aristophanes but Meletus confuses Socrates with the atheistic Anaxagoras when he describes Socrates as seeking to study the heavens (18a) the second charge of corruption is also in Aristophanes' Clouds but confuses Socrates with Protagoras. This led to confusion (18e) of Socrates with other sophists like Gorgias, Prodicus, and Hippias. The new prejudice against Socrates really is because of the Socratic paradox (20c-21a): â€Å"he knows nothing and only in this he claims to be wise â€Å" this paradox aroused hatred against him (21b, 23ab), even though he explains that the knowledge of his ignorance lead to his philosophical mission in life .his mission to question and to seek â€Å"the unexamined life is no life for a man†(21c-23c) this is explained by Chaerephon's enquiry at Apollo's oracle at Delphi declaring Socrates the wisest of men (21b-) Socrates turns this philosophical interrogation into his philosophical purpose ,as a consequence the young followed him trying to copy his questions to their leaders (23c) this arose the charge of corrupting the youth ( 23d) since like Socrates, they also questioned the leaders of democracy and religion, claiming not to believe in the gods and discover the heavens (d) . Having in mind all theses accusations Socrates, should had defend himself better but that was not the case. Throughout the trial, he acted as though he wanted to lose the case. He went out of his way to antagonize the jury, making comments that associated himself with certain people and ideas that were offensive to the jury. socrates :: essays research papers This paper will argue that during â€Å"The trial and Death of Socrates†, Socrates could have given better arguments for his defense. Sexual harassment is another subject of interpersonal communication that occurs in the workplace. Although sexual harassment violates Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and as amended by the Civil Rights Act of 1991, it is still a reality in all places of employment which is why it is something that everyone should have the ability to identify, understand, and effectively respond to. The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission defines sexual harassment as follows: Unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature constitute sexual harassment when this conduct explicitly or implicitly affects an individual's employment, unreasonably interferes with an individual's work performance, or creates an intimidating, hostile, and offensive work environment. Sexual harassment can take place between any two individuals: any gender to any gender, any business, school, place of social, religious, and political organization, authority to subordinate, subordinate to authority. The DeVito text separates this definiti...

How does R. L. Stevenson create horror and suspense in the novel ‘Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde?’ Essay

‘Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde’ is a classic horror novel written by R. L. Stevenson. He was born in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1850. He grew up in Edinburgh which had two very different faces: the prosperous, middle-class new town and the ‘old black city’ with its poverty, disease and over crowding. This can be compared to the novel because of the duality of nature between Jekyll and Hyde. The novel would have had a different impact upon its original readers because at this time London was a divided city; there were two major extremes, the rich and the poor, and as Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde portray both these extremes the novel is shown from the two ends of the divided London. Jekyll lives in a respectable area which has ‘an air of invitation’ and Hyde lives in ‘a sinister block of buildings.’ Also, in 1886, the readers of ‘Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde’ would have interpreted the torments of Henry Jekyll as the traditional struggle between good and evil. The novel is about a respectable doctor, Dr Jekyll, who transforms himself into a savage murderer, Mr Hyde. A girl is ruthlessly trampled over by this vicious Mr Hyde and he writes a cheque for à ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½100 compensation; however the cheque was signed by Dr Jekyll. Mr Utterson and Mr Enfield come across a door which reminds them of the savage murderer and Mr Utterson’s suspicions are aroused when he finds Hyde’s dead body inside the laboratory where Jekyll had locked himself in, inside here is a letter written by Dr Jekyll. Dr Lanyon dies and gives Utterson a letter which said that Jekyll was having trouble with the effects of the drugs. In the final chapter Utterson reads Jekyll’s confessions. The story of the novel is told through many different narrators, Enfield, Utterson, Lanyon and Jekyll all play a part in telling the story. Stevenson has used this technique of multiple perspectives to heighten the mystery and suspense of the story as this allows the reader to see more clearly into their characters and relationships. ‘Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde’ is such a well known text that it is known by more people than those that have actually read it, this is because there were no less than four film versions appeared during 1920 and 1953. In chapter one Stevenson uses many devices to create horror and suspense. The title of this chapter ‘The Story of the Door’ adds secrecy and mystery as it is part of a mysterious house, the street is pleasant except from this shabby house. This strange and always locked door becomes a significant symbol of mystery as we do not know where it leads. The neglected door on the smart street is also concerned with the duality of nature theme. This door creates secrecy and suspense because it is always locked and you can only enter with a key, also the windows are always shut. At the start of this chapter we are immediately introduced to one of the main characters, Mr Utterson; he appears complex as there are contradictions in his character ‘lean, long, dusty, dreary and yet somehow loveable,’ this is the major theme of the chapter: duality of nature and it is a reoccurring theme throughout the novel and the narrator hints that he knows people of ill repute. The setting of most of the novel is at night or early hours in the morning; this creates an eerie atmosphere, and also suspense and mystery because it is rather odd why people are walking out at ‘three o’clock of a black winter morning.’ Whilst Enfield tells ‘a very odd story’ tension is created as he repeats ‘street after street’ and this highlights his isolation and produces tension as the reader can empathise with him if they have ever been in a dark, isolated situation before. In this chapter secrecy is an important theme; everyone has something to hide and so they are reluctant to ask questions suggesting they do not want to hear an answer. Stevenson creates horror in this chapter as the introduction of Mr Hyde, who ‘trampled calmly over the child’s body and left her screaming on the floor,’ is a horrific image. This is peculiar behaviour and the reader has maximum sympathy for the young girl. In addition, Hyde is not at all disturbed by the incident of ‘calmly’ hurting her. When he witnesses the incident, Mr Enfield, an unemotional man has a strong reaction about it, ‘sawbones turned sick and white with the desire to kill him.’ In the second chapter entitled ‘Search for Mr Hyde,’ the title builds up a sense of anticipation in the reader because it is like a mystery investigation – searching for something or someone that could be lost or on the run. The will in this chapter is exceptionally odd; it creates a sense of extreme mystery in the reader. This is because Dr Jekyll’s will states that all his possessions shall be passed on to Edward Hyde, this shows the reader that there is some association and connection between Jekyll and Hyde. However, what is even stranger is that he says if he has disappeared or had an unexplained absence for any period exceeding three calendar months, this shows the reader that he is suspecting something might happen to him and builds up a sense of anticipation and keeps the reader interested and want to read on. Stevenson is giving clues about what is going on and Utterson thinks that Hyde is blackmailing Jekyll. Hyde also has contradictions in his character, he is described and ‘timid and bold,’ this oxymoron suggests of the duality of his character. ‘He may grow impatient to inherit,’ this suggests that Utterson is worried about his friend Jekyll and thinks he could be in danger as he left all of his belongings to Hyde, and with Hyde’s monstrous reputation he may not want to wait for his inheritance. The chapter ends with the lawyer in very low spirits, he feels forced to confront the fact that he too has been responsible for certain wrongs which he has taken care to hide, and this all creates suspense and mystery. He suspects blackmail or murder. In chapter three, Jekyll shows respect and admiration for Utterson and he convinces Utterson of the need for absolute secrecy, Stevenson does this to heighten the suspense and keep the reader engrossed. Jekyll thinks that Lanyon is dismissed as ‘hide-bound pedant’ in his thoughts as they had an argument about scientific thinking. Jekyll believes that Lanyon is narrow-minded and conventional in thinking. Chapter four is set almost a year later and it is the most horrific chapter in the book. R.L. Stevenson makes it gruesome with disturbing details and it would be extremely shocking for Victorian readers. This is because in Victorian society there was such a large emphasis on manners and behaviour. This chapter is appalling and inhumane to the reader. The passage which describes Carew’s murder is macabre and distressing, ‘bones were audibly shattered,’ this clause is effective because it appeals to the senses and makes it sound more horrendous and abominable. It is odd that Carew gets brutally murdered like this since he appeared to be such a nice man. This passage also presents horrific details that Mr Hyde beat him with his power and strength. R.L. Stevenson creates more suspense and mystery and gives subtle hints that the murder could have something to do with the mystery of Jekyll and Hyde because it could have had something to do with the will. The description of the setting as being, ‘a district of some city in a nightmare,’ is a sinister description creating atmosphere and horror. The ever-present fog contributes to the atmosphere as it is gloomy and it also portrays secrecy as it can be used to ‘cover up’ things. A threatening atmosphere is created with the flickering of street lamps and the personification of the fog, for example ‘the fog still slept.’ In chapter five horror and suspense is created by the description of Jekyll as it contrasts with that of before, ‘Dr At Ease,’ however now he looks ‘deadly sick’ and is terrified. This shows the reader that his connection with Hyde is making him ill Jekyll has received a letter and this creates suspense and secrecy, he is unsure about whether to show it to the police and this creates mystery. The description of the city as being ‘drowned’ reinforces the air of impending doom and adds slight horror and suspense. Towards the end of the chapter Utterson is in utter disbelief that Dr Jekyll forged for a murderer, Stevenson uses the description, ‘And his blood ran cold in his veins,’ this creates horror and suspense because it must be something very bad that has happened for someone’s blood to appear to turn cold, and also it makes the reader wait in anticipation. At the end of the chapter a cloak of secrecy descends upon matters and a guest is sworn to secrecy. In chapter six Dr Jekyll begins to improve with the disappearance of Mr Hyde and he is being associated with good things, ‘charity, and religion.’ Dr Lanyon has had a shock, ‘as a look in the eye and quality of manner that seemed to testify some deep-seated terror of the mind,’ he is scared however it is not that he is scared about dieing but something else. This creates suspense and leaves a sense of anxiety in the reader. However when Lanyon’s face changes and he holds up a trembling hand the reader is led to believe that Lanyon’s decline has something to do with Jekyll. In chapter seven the incident which the two gentlemen witness informs the reader that Jekyll is suffering from something which he cannot control, this creates suspense because the reader will wonder what it is that he cannot control. The gentlemen’s ‘expression of such abject terror and despair, as froze the very blood of the two gentlemen below,’ shows the reader that this is a link between Jekyll and Hyde as the reaction of the gentlemen from Jekyll reminds us of the reaction of the gentlemen from Hyde. Chapter eight opens dramatically with the entrance of an unexpected Poole, who is Utterson’s butler and his appearance is altered by a shock. The title of this chapter ‘The Last Night’ makes the reader think that this could be the last night or someone or something, for example, Jekyll dieing or a secret being revealed. Suspense is added when it says, ‘crushing anticipation of calamity’ as they are just waiting for something bad to happen. In this chapter the reader is meant to think that Mr Hyde is in the room and that he has killed Jekyll for the will and so Mr Utterson’s predictions were correct, this adds suspense because the reader does not know for definite if it is him in the room and they want to find out. In the novel Hyde has always been described as animal, for example in chapter four, ‘with ape-like fury’ and also in chapter two, ‘hissing’ this is comparing him to a snake and snakes can be seen as evil. In Victorian London, when it was a divided city, the poor received no schooling and could not vote, the wealthy people were afraid of them and saw them as being like animals, Hyde is also described as an animal. In chapter eight, R.L. Stevenson portrays many clues to lead the reader to think that it is Hyde, ‘crying out like a rat,’ and also it says, ‘and this was more of a dwarf,’ as the reader we know that Jekyll is tall and Hyde is shorter. There was a ‘mask upon his face’ so this creates suspense as the reader wants to know who it is. R.L. Stevenson is building up a sense of foreboding and expectation as the reader will think the thing he is describing is Hyde, ‘London hummed solemnly all around; but nearer at hand, the stillness was only broken by the sound of a footfall moving to and fro along the cabinet floor,’ this creates suspense as the reader knows that something bad is going to happen. Stevenson uses descriptions which appeals to the reader’s senses and so you can imagine you were there. He uses the technique of authentication and the reader is made to feel as though they are involved on an intimate revelation of feelings and events as the plot of the book is revealed through diaries and letters. This makes the reader feel included and keeps them interested. In chapter nine, ‘Dr Lanyon’s narrative,’ the reader is about to discover the truth about what Dr Jekyll has been up to. Stevenson chose to set this chapter at midnight as it is the witching hour; this adds mystery and horror because of the time of night that it is set in. The novel is structured so that the mystery and suspense is built up right until the penultimate chapter, this chapter reveals Jekyll’s terrible secret. Up until this point the reader can only see Hyde through the eyes of the other characters and as the reader becomes drawn into the mystery of the novel it tells the reader important information about the characters. Stevenson chose midnight for the arrival of the strange messenger because it is known as the witching hour and Hyde is thought of as inhuman. Finally, in the last chapter, ‘Henry Jekyll’s Full Statement of the Case,’ the reader sees the end of the story from Jekyll’s point of view. Stevenson decided to end it in this way to create tension so that the reader would only read Jekyll’s side last and keep them in suspense. Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde represent the two sides of good and evil, as Jekyll does ‘pious work’ and Hyde uses ‘blasphemies,’ both of these connecting with religion as it is an extremely important part of Victorian people’s life. It poses the question – which is more powerful good or evil? Stevenson makes evil prevail in the end because Jekyll is banished by Mr Hyde, however this could be Stevenson telling us that evil is stronger or because humans are weak-willed. His opinion of this could be shaped like this because of his background; he was brought up as a Calvinists and this emphasised that our desires are naturally evil, so this would mentally affect you as a child. To conclude, it would be impossible for the modern reader to read this novel as an unsuspecting Victorian might have done because people see things like Jekyll’s double identity in everyday life, on the television and read it more in books so they are aware of what could happen, however in Victorian times they did not have television and so the only place where they would see this is in books. All of the devices that Stevenson has used to create horror and suspense have a strong impact upon the book because he wanted to keep the readers in suspense for as long as possible and he tried to make them discover for themselves the ending by leaving a series of clues. Overall, I think this was an interesting book, at times I found it quite difficult and got a bit confused, however I soon picked up again. I think that Stevenson was clever in the way that he used multiple perspectives to heighten the suspense of the story and thought that it was a good novel. Finally, the novel has had such a large impact on language that it has become a saying now. The phrase ‘Jekyll and Hyde’ describes someone with a split personality as being nice and nasty.

Blood Clotting Essay

Blood clotting is an adaptive/defensive mechanism of the human body. Its primary purpose is to prevent the loss of blood from the cardiovascular system from damaged blood vessels in order to avoid shock and possible death. This accomplished by a process called coagulation wherein blood solidify at the site of injury through a complex process involving platelet aggregation and fibrin formation coupled with thrombin and a dozen other clotting factors. Though the mechanism is designed to prevent deleterious harm, clotting can also be harmful especially when inappropriately triggered such as in the case of strokes and infarctions. In the article by Cathleen Genova, she discusses the findings of a report made in the April 17th 2009 issue of Cell, a journal from Cell Press Publication, where researchers found a possible way of preventing life-threatening clots. The discovery might offer a new way to fight clot formation before it can even begin, according to the researchers. According to the findings, thrombin isn’t the only player in the clotting process, in fact â€Å"enzymes known as matrix metalloproteases have recently emerged as important players in platelet function and the biology of blood vessels. Two of those enzymes, MMP-1 and MMP-2 can actually encourage platelet activation† early in the clotting process. If treatments were aimed at blocking the MMP1-PAR1 pathway, a new way of treating patients with acute coronary syndromes may be developed. The advantages of such treatments, the researchers predict, would be that â€Å"an MMP-1 inhibitor might be better tolerated† especially since careful balance between the risk of dangerous blood clots and the risk of bleeding must be kept in mind. Works Cited Genova, Cathleen. â€Å"How Life-Threatening Blood Clots Take Hold. † Medical News Today. MediLexicon, Intrnational Ltd. Accessed 23 April 2009 ARTICLE http://www. medicalnewstoday. com/articles/146508. php How Life-Threatening Blood Clots Take Hold Article Date: 18 Apr 2009 – 0:00 PDT When plaques coating blood vessel walls rupture and expose collagen, platelets spring into action to form a blood clot at the damaged site. Now, a new report in the April 17th issue of the journal Cell, a Cell Press publication, reveals how those life-threatening clots – a leading cause of death in the United States, Europe and other industrialized countries – get an early grip. The discovery might offer a new way to fight clot formation before it can even begin, according to the researchers. â€Å"Compared to other diseases, blood clotting has been very well understood,† said Athan Kuliopulos of Tufts Medical Center and Tufts University School of Medicine. Nevertheless, he continued, many people still suffer from heart attacks, ischemic stroke and death as a result of clot formation. â€Å"Drugs designed to inhibit clots through known pathways are widely used by millions. They work well, but not perfectly. There is still an unmet need. † Those drugs include aspirin and the so-called thienopyridines, including Clopidogrel (trade name Plavix). Scientists have known that a protein called thrombin plays an important role in clot formation as a potent activator of platelets. It also cuts fibrinogen into fibrin, a fibrous protein that works together with platelets to form a clot. But thrombin isn’t the whole story. Enzymes known as matrix metalloproteases have recently emerged as important players in platelet function and the biology of blood vessels. Two of those enzymes, MMP-1 and MMP-2 can actually encourage platelet activation, according to earlier studies, although the means were unknown. In cancer cells too, MMP-1 activates a receptor known as PAR1 – the same receptor that is also responsible for receiving the thrombin signal on human platelets. â€Å"There is abundant proMMP-1 coating platelets,† Kuliopulos said. â€Å"We thought maybe it was on the outside waiting to be activated by something. Maybe it could be involved in an early event in blood clotting, before thrombin is around. † Indeed, Kuliopulos’ team has now connected those dots. They show that exposure of platelets to collagen activates MMP-1, which in turn directly cut PAR1 on the surface of platelets. Collagen is the first thing a platelet â€Å"sees† when a blood vessel ruptures or is cut. The MMP-1-PAR1 pathway activates another set of molecular players known to be involved in early clot formation, he said. Those activated platelets change their shape, sending out spikes and membrane sheets. â€Å"Within seconds, they become more sticky,† adhering to the vessel surface and then other platelets. Moreover, they show that treatments that block the MMP1-PAR1 pathway prevent blood clots from forming in the presence of collagen, suggesting that drugs targeting this metalloprotease-receptor system could offer a new way to treat patients with acute coronary syndromes. According to the new results, PAR1 inhibitors already being tested in clinical trials might have an added benefit, Kuliopulos said. It’s also possible they might work a little too well, since there is a careful balance between the risk of dangerous blood clots and the risk of bleeding. â€Å"An MMP-1 inhibitor might be better tolerated,† he said. Leger, Katie O’Callaghan, Lidija Covic, and Athan Kuliopulos, of Tufts University School of Medicine, Molecular Oncology Research Institute, Tufts Medical Center, Boston, MA. Identifying Sustainability Plan Effect Essay

The issue of terrorism is not the only one over which the countries are focusing on; in fact, there is another hot burning issue of ‘Global Warming’ that is causing the depletion of ozone layer, melting ice, raising sea levels, and so the temperature too. In this paper, I would be acting as a consultant who is hired by Princeton University, and would be draw attention to the alarming causes of greenhouse gas and devise a sustainability plan that can overcome those issues. Global warming is fundamentally caused by excessive emission of greenhouse gases that are the chemical compounds present in the atmosphere of Earth. These gases damage the ozone layer and allow the sunlight to easily penetrate into the atmosphere and as result sunstrokes, skin cancer, and other diseases happen too. Here, in the United States, these emissions come from the ignition of fossil fuels that are used for energy purposes, since the economic growth is highly dependent upon energy sector (eia, 2008). Greenhouse gases include Carbon dioxide, methane gas, nitrous oxide, and fluorocarbons, transmit infrared radiations into the atmosphere that raise the temperature due to the breaking of ozone layer, hence causing many other issues (Cohen & Hopwood, n. d). Sustainability Plan Considering the ongoing issue of global warming, it is the responsibility of the educational and as well as other institutions to increase the awareness among the people regarding it, and formulate certain strategies that aim on restraining such issues. Now let’s discuss the effects of a sustainability plan that would have over several organizational aspects of Princeton University. Vision Princeton University should design its vision that not only focuses on the production of quality students with outstanding knowledge and grades, but also on teaching the students about the sustainable development in the future for a greener tomorrow for future generations. Mission The mission of this university should be the commencement of new degree programs and courses related to Sustainable Development and Entrepreneurial Management that focuses on initiating ‘Green’ businesses. Organization If the sustainability plan is to be implemented in Princeton University then there would be a prominent change in the whole organization, ranging from the advancement in its technologies, processes, procedures, organizational design, policies, etc. The university would have to set up new infrastructure and technologies for the purpose of assisting students to come and learn from it, use them for research purposes, and adopt newer and greener ways of living life. As far as the enabling of technology and processes is concerned, the university would have to invest a great amount of money in bringing on new technologies, machineries, equipments, infrastructure, and most importantly, the intellectual capital that would be present in experts, scientists, and experienced professors. In other words, the resources for the students should be provided with which they can learn the practical application of what they learn in books, because without application they would be wasting what they studied. Moreover, processes would be shaped in a way where the emphasis would be laid on the practicality of the concept and not just the theories itself. This would have to deal with some sort of change in the organizational design in which the policies, preferences, faculty, teaching criteria, and curriculum would be modified. People Attracting and maintaining talented students, faculty, and other staff members should be the first priority of the university, since it’s all about the students who learn and progress and the faculty who teach them. Faculty members who may include scientists, cosmologists, or environmentalists, should be provided with sufficient resources to conduct research and development. They might be sent abroad for participating in conferences, workshops, and seminars from where they can train themselves accordingly, which later would result fruitful for the students who would get up-to-date knowledge about the current happenings, issues, developments, and solutions for them. Teaching the students would not suffice; in fact, they should be encouraged to indulge in the practicality of the studies. University should arrange certain contests and business plan competitions where the students would be asked to participate and come up with the most feasible business that is sustainable and green. Moreover, the students of IT may engage in developing certain products, equipments, and technologies that might be used at a later stage for greener tomorrow, for instance, electric cars and solar energy chargers. Just as every employee needs rewards for keeping him motivated and directed; students are no exception (Robbins & Judge, 2007). Based on their achievements in the competitions, they must be encouraged by offering them scholarships, money prizes, and medals. Conclusion Therefore, it is the responsibility of universities to make their students aware of the changing environmental conditions and offer them, opportunities and resources to explore and ascertain newer ways of living and doing business for having a better and greener tomorrow.

Outsourcing Information Technology and Security Essay

This can be defined as the employment done to another company by an organization for the service provision in information technology or security services rather than the use of the corporate workers in the performance of such a duty. With the growing intensity of commercial activities the concepts of strategic management has been of importance in formulating various structures and economies in the business activity. Managers have consistently understood the role played by external outsourcing. Such is done is the recognition of the economies of scale and economies in the cost factor which the organization would have been affected. The Elite Supercars can be voted in as one of the global organizations where outsourcing has never been compromised. However a deep concern into the principles of economies of cost factor have been put into consideration. Firstly, an importance is attached to the scale of adequacy in terms of levels of ability for the service provider. Since the provision of both the information technology and security services call for technical pursuits from the providers, the choice of service providers has been in recognition of their technical abilities and competencies. Either, the outsourcing activity has still been in evaluation of the cost parameters. Through this activity, the company was to get a relatively lower scale in its costs. However, a scrutiny and evaluation was done by the management in accordance with the cost factors in choosing various clients against their quality of services. The choice of the clients by the company was indeed a compliment of lower costing service sales above high quality service inputs. Above all other factors, the evaluation of the environmental factors in the activity was a factor. However the two choices were complimentarily environmental friendly within the organizational setup With Elite Supercars, outsourcing information technology and security has been important complements in its activities. This is a car manufacturing company with its roots at Singapore. However to it, outsourcing of the above two corporate factors draws a question of high concern. Firstly, with its increased manufacturing activity, the company had to outsource development of various software useful in the organization’s processes. In the 1st November 2006, the company’s CEO released a press release, where it had contracted the Northern Ferrari Hire for developing an outsourcing program through the web marketing. This was to involve various software on strategic marketing modalities. Perhaps, the impressive sales turn over embraced by the company can be credited to this fact. Through the program, the company is able to adequately provide an attractive package of marketing services to its customers. Through this method, customers have closer relationship with the company where it can adequately communicate with them through the Internet. Suchan, Charles, 2006) Some various examples show the implementation success of this activity. This activity by the organization’s implementation of the program has even driven it to its extended boundaries of its activities. The program was provisional and to a strategy in various accounting components. Firstly, it was a way of optimal costing. As an important tool in an organization, optimal costing implies efficiency in the activity performance. Optimal costing is also seen as the economical method in use of organizational resources. To the Elite Supercars, outsourcing of information technology is a complement of various efficiency-costing benefits. The information outsourcing therefore shows a big success in the company’s costing system where it has obtained various efficiencies related to the program. Through use of an external supply, the organization had various benefits ascribed to it in terms of the costs. Like an external contract, the activity itself was less costing than the use of its own staff. Either, this activity by its own required a high scale of technological know how about it. In regard to its inexperienced employees, outsourcing is still fundamental in the implementation success of the program. Elite Supercars was not strong and able enough to provide the set of competent staff allied to this facility. Either well, to the organization, the provision of a set of technical staff on information technology was not economical enough in relation to the cost factor of the broad organizational activity. However to the company, perhaps the greatest benefit from the project was the consequent development and growth of its sales turn over. Since the enactment of program, the company has continued to experience high sales volume. Above this, there have been various efficiencies in terms of the marketing factor. There has been a continued reduction in the cost of marketing through the various effecienciess and economies of scale borne out of the process. (Cantwell, Alfonso, Granstrand, 2004) Outsourcing, by the Elite Supercars on security has been fundamentally one its management activities. From the past experience in insecurity and theft of its cars at their manufacturing site, the company had to seek refuge of finding a storage facility for its cars. To the company, it chose to use the facility of storage that had been constructed by Dutch Authorities. With the same storage facility, the organization experiences lower cases of theft (if any) to its highly priced cars. Formerly, the increasing state of loss of cars had become a problem which threatened the company in being out of the industry. It had continued to get higher levels of losses through the theft of its cars. At one level therefore, the facility offered cost saving attributes through reduced scales of care theft. (Domberger, 1998) The move to use the storage facility provided by the Dutch Authorities was perhaps one of it strategic management goals. Construction of its own facility was a factor seen as increasing the level of its cost factor consequently. The construction of its own shortage facility was to involve a high level of cost factor compared to the level of its operational capacity. This is an attribute of success in the implementation of the program. Since prevention of car from theft was still a factor of consideration, the opportunity cost of not constructing its own facility was basically to be through the use of another facility. Otherwise, the loss that could accrue from the loss of the cars through theft was far beyond the cost outlay got from the payment to the external shortage. Therefore, the security outsourcing program was itself a factor of high attribute in the success of the company’s activities. To the current period, security problem is no longer an issue and the company continues to embrace the broad economies allied to these out sources. Broadly therefore, outsourcing activity by the company shows a strategic management tool towards the organization activity. The company embraces the long run benefits of these two programs.
